STOLEN XIII

On March 18, 1990, two men dressed as police officers walked into the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, Massachusetts and stole 13 works of art, including paintings by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Manet. The heist, which remains the largest art robbery in history, remains unsolved to this day and the stolen artwork has never been recovered.

The robbery was carried out with careful planning and precision. The thieves tricked the security guard on duty, telling him they were responding to a disturbance at the museum. Once inside, they overpowered the guards, tied them up, and spent the next 81 minutes systematically looting the museum. They stole a total of 13 works of art, including three Rembrandts, a Vermeer, and a Manet, among others.

Despite an extensive investigation and numerous leads, the perpetrators of the robbery were never caught and the stolen artwork has never been recovered. The FBI has offered a $10 million reward for information leading to the recovery of the stolen works, but to date, no one has claimed the reward.

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum has worked tirelessly to try to recover the stolen works, offering a $5 million reward of its own and launching a public campaign to raise awareness about the robbery. The museum has also offered to return the artwork to the thieves, no questions asked, in the hopes that the works will be returned safely.

The theft of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum’s artwork is a tragedy for the art world and for all those who appreciate the beauty and cultural significance of these masterpieces. It serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting our cultural heritage and the need for vigilance in the fight against art crime.
